Fairhope’s Finest Friday: Meet Butterfly Cottage!

by Elizabeth on July 29, 2019

Let me introduce you to Butterfly Cottage. This beautiful little boutique is located across the street from the Coffee Loft in the Consignment District on Section St. Off to the right you’ll find them, with their extraordinary wares normally displaying lovingly out in front of their establishment.

Butterfly Cottage was established in March 2019, by two good friends who love vintage and repurposed items. They specialize in vintage, antiques, painted furniture, children’s furniture, accessories, linens, vintage books and decorative items.

Aren't these the most beautiful dresser jars?

Susan Lloyd and Gwen Vaughan are friends who realized their love for antiquing and decorating. Many years of collecting, buying and setting up at antique shows together helped them realize quickly how their abilities complemented one other.

The duo are known for their talent for display and creating various vignettes at shows. Goodness knows, after being in their shop, I’d love for them to do my whole house…forget the vignettes! :)

They’ve worked travelling shows in Florida, Louisiana and Texas, and realized that they wanted to set up shop permanently.

The store officially opened during Arts and Crafts week 2019 with lots of inventory and little advertising, save for word of mouth.

Today, many folks come by from time to time just to see “what’s new” at the shop, because they know it’s new every day! This antiquing dynamo are always researching new looks and techniques to repurpose and assist customers with help in using vintage and antique items in their decorating scheme.

”We have unique quality items in our store, things you would not find in your local stores.”

My Experience: I took a little table over to them that

I honestly had little hope we could do anything with. I wanted it antiqued, but it had a finish on it that make me think we might never accomplish what I had in mind. A few days later I got the call that my piece was ready. And of course, despite my misgivings, it’s perfect. It was MUCH less expensive than I thought it would be — and I paid for the paint!

So, after being open for a year, what’s the buzz about Butterfly Cottage?

“What a cute shop”

“I have never seen another shop like this”

“A friend of mine told me to come and visit your shop”

“I will be sure and tell all my friends about your shop”

Part of what makes Susan and Gwen’s partnership so cool is their love of the hunt - they’ll take special requests, then when they are at antique shows throughout the country, if they see something you will love, they’ll let you know! What truly drives them is their desire to take an item that looks used up, drab, and sad, and transform it into a useful and eye-catching piece.
